A Safavid Period carpet fragment(1502–1722): An early Indo-Persian possibly Herat or Isfahan carpet fragment. Design of spiralling scrolls, floral palmettes, and cloudbands on a deep wine-red field supported by border of lanceolate leaves in two colors and large floral palmettes on a blue field. Both the color palette and the design are characteristic with Herat and Isfahan carpets of the Safavid period. Carpets of this kind were exported at the time to India and copied there, it is often impossible to destinguish them. The original size was most probably 600–700×415 cm. 16th-17th century. W. 406 cm. H. 164 cm.

Provenance: German collection.

Safavid carpets are frequently to be seen in Dutch seventeenth century paintings and of all Safavid carpets the Herats were the ones most widely distributed throughout Europe and mainly to countries which has trade-relations with India and Persia through the East India companies.
