Peter Hvidt (b. Copenhagen 1916, d. s.p. 1986)

Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (b. Ålborg 1907, d. Hellerup 1993)

“AX”. A unique teak table/bench with sculptural Y-shaped legs laminated with beech. Loose foldable seat cushion upholstered with resp. light and dark grey wool. Designed 1954. This example manufactured 1954 by Fritz Hansen. H. 40,5/44 cm. W. 48 cm. L. 191 cm.

Provenance: Private Danish collection. Acquired by present owner's parents directly from the Cabinetmakers Guild exhibition in 1954. Hence by descent in the family.

Exhibited: The Cabinetmakers' Guild 400th anniversary exhibition at Forum, 1954.

When Fritz Hansen as a furniture factory was specially invited to participate in the 400th anniversary exhibition of The Copenhagen cabinetmakers' Guild, they settled on the hugely popular “AX” series, originally designed 1948 for MoMA's low cost furniture competition. Hvidt & Mølgaard re-worked the “AX” design into this finely crafted and unique table/bench. A piece that was both typical of Fritz Hansen, yet worthy of any cabinetmaker.
