Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra VII of Egypt, Tetradrachm, Antiochia ad Orontem, c. 36 BC, RPC 4094, Prieur 27, C 2, BMC 53, 14.84 g, corroded.

This rare and imporant type shows the portraits of what is arguably the most famous loving couple in History, that of Antonius and Cleopatra. After the assassination of Caesar, Cleopatras lover, she sided with the Roman Second Triumvirate and met Antonius in Tarsus in 41BC. Ten years later the joint forces of Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian (Augustus) at the Battle of Actium, and after his invasion of Egypt the following year they both committed suicide.
