The gems that make up “La Nina” are the first ever mined in Aappaluttoq in Greenland at the Greenland Ruby mining operation, and show the various shades of pink and red that the mine produces.

“La Nina” is the first piece of Greenlandic ruby and pink sapphire jewellery to be sold at auction. A percentage of the proceeds from this sale will go to the Pink Polar Bear Foundation, an initiative set up by Greenland Ruby to support international polar research in all disciplines, especially protecting the inhabitants (animal and human) of Greenland, who are affected by climate and accompanying cultural changes.

Greenlandic rubies and pink sapphires were first discovered in the late 1960s by GEUS (Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland) in the icy mountainous landscape surrounding the majestic fjords in the southwest of Greenland, where the rubies are said to be amongst the oldest on earth. Mining of rubies and pink sapphires in Aappaluttoq (Ah-puh-lu-tok) is done in collaboration with the Greenland Government, adhering to the strictest of Northern European standards. All gems can be traced from mine to market. Greenland Ruby is the most sophisticated coloured gemstone mining operation in the world and is owned by the Norwegian LNS group.
