Erling Jessen

Oak easy chair, seat and back with patinated natural grain leather. Designed 1960. Made 1960 by cabinetmaker Søren Horn. Leather work made by Royal saddle-maker F. & L. Dahlman's Eft.

Provenance. Aquired by current owner from the family after master Saddle-maker Willy Hendriksen, the previous owner of F. & L. Dahlman's Eft.

Literature: Grete Jalk [ed.]: “40 Years of Danish Furniture Design”, vol. 4, p. 131.

The chair was made by Søren Horn but was shown in the booth of cabinetmaker Knud Juul-Hansen at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1960.

According to seller, only 3 test examples were made of this model. Furthermore, we are informed that there was a bit of drama the night before the opening of the exhibition in 1960. It turned out that Søren Horn had measured incorrectly where the holes in the frame should be positioned for the leather seat-straps. He was forced to bring it back to his workshop, and that evening he made new holes and repaired the wrong ones with wood left over from the production of the same chair. This “original repair” is hardly visible.
