Attributed Ephraim Ståhl master in Stockholm 1794-1820

A late Gustavian white painted and giltwood sofa, the back with three loose cushions and sides with openwork carved griffins, ten round tapering legs. Early 19th century. H. 90 cm. L. 233 cm.

Provenance: The Swedish castle Säbylund, Närke.

This sofa was presumably made by the Stockholm chair-maker Ephraim Ståhl, 1767–1820. His furniture was in high demand, and his workshop furnished numerous castles and manor houses with chairs and couches. Literature: Torsten Sylvén, 'Stolens guldalder', 2003.
