The letters in this extremly important collection were written from 1895–1909 to Henrik Pontoppidan's (1857–1943) publisher at “Det Schubotheske Forlag”, Einar Aage Hirschsprung (1869–1909), the son of Heinrich Hirschsprung, who founded the museum “Hirschsprungs Samling” in Copenhagen. The letters document Henrik Pontoppidan's work with several of his most accomplished works in this period and gives a detailed picture of the Danish literary scene.

As a writer Henrik Pontoppidan was an interesting figure, distancing himself both from the conservative environment in which he was brought up and from his socialist contemporaries and friends. He was the youngest and in many ways the most original and influential member of the Modern Break-Through. Henrik Pontoppidan shared with Karl Gjellerup the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1917 for “his authentic descriptions of present-day life in Denmark.”
