The Swedish historian and philologist Karl Henrik Karlsson traveled to Italy in 1894 after completing his doctoral dissertation. He settled in Rome to study the Vatican archives, which he needed for his research on the Middle Ages in the Nordic countries, particularly Sweden.
In the present portrait by Östermann, we see a slightly distant and contemplative Karlsson with a slightly furrowed brow and a downward gaze.
Mounted on cardboard. The paper has turned slightly brown. A few very minimal damp discolourations. Mounted in passe-partout.
