Danish painter, 18th century

Portrait of Councilor, Court Master and County Governor of Copenhagen Knud Juel (1665–1709), wearing a long wig, dressed in armour holding a helmet and bearing a fur lined red rope. He is standing in a landscape with ships at sea in the background. Inscribed below the coat of arms: “Knud Juell. Etats Raad og Amtmand over Kiøbenhavns Stift, Død i sin Alders 40de Aar”. (Knud Juell. Councillor and Govenor of Copenhagen, died 40 years old). Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 161×178 cm.

Knud Juel was the son of Niels Juel (1626–1697) and second generation of the Juel family at Valdemar's Castle, lord of the manor 1697–1709. In 1695 he married Christine Elisabeth, née von Knuth (1676–1738). See also cat. no. 220 and 238.

At some point in the 18th century, the lord of the manor of Valdemar’s Castle obviously decided to order a series of portraits of his predecessors and relatives. See also 257, 266 and 267.
