An original b/w silver gelatin press photograph of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (1874–1965) showing his famous 'V for Victory' sign to crowds in Whitehall, London as they celebrate VE Day, May 8, 1945. In the left side of the picture Sir John Anderson (later 1st Viscount Waverley; 1882–1958), the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in the right side Ernest Bevin (1881–1951), the Minister of Labour. Back with editorial stamp with handwritten instructions, restriction stamp and stamped publication dates (May 9, 1945, May 8, 1955, November 30, 1964). Black-lacquered and patinated wooden frame with double glazing. Visible size 19.5×19.5 cm. Frame size 30×30 cm.

Victory in Europe Day is the day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday, May 8, 1945. Thus, the day marks the official end of World War II in Europe. Russia and some former Soviet countries, however, celebrate the occasion on May 9, since Germany's surrender entered into force at 23:01 on May 8 Central European Summer Time. This corresponded with 00:01 on May 9 in Moscow Time.
