In 1930, the 125th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth, Johannes Larsen painted 34 oil paintings with motifs from “The Ugly Duckling”. It was a motif that interested Larsen, and he continued working with it. In 1945–1947, he created a series of 35 watercolours, which today hang at the museum in Kerteminde.
