872/131

An English purple tinted glass flask with circular body and two handles, one side engraved HR 1643, the other ST CROIX, a Maltese cross and two crossed branches. 17th century. H. 16 cm.

In 1625 Saint Croix was occupied by Dutch and English settlers. Two decades later, in 1645, the English colony expelled the Dutchmen after controversies and battles took place between the two parties, which left several dead including a Dutch and English Governor. The English controlled the island until 1650, where the community was brutally attacked and conquered by the Spanish fleet. The Danish West Indies were in Danish hands 1755–1917.
