Portrait of Anne Margrethe Smith neé Hammer (1784–1858) in an embroidered golden dress and earrings. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 75×64 cm.
From 1842 the sitter possessed the house, “Spurveskjul” (Sparrows hideaway), built in 1806–7 by the artist, Nicolai Abildgaard, (1743–1809) for his young wife.
Provenance: In the family by descent until today.
The canvas is relined. Crackles and a few minimal peelings and along the stretcher a mark. Retouches/repairs. In need of cleaning.
