Nanna Hänninen (b. Rovaniemi 1973)

“Space I”, 2000. Ed. 5/5. Signed Nanna H on verso. C-print on Diasec. 110×140 cm.

Nanna Hänninen often photographs white paper in abstract spaces (often also in white), creating what could be a snow-filled landscape. But she has also photographed exactly that: a snowy white-on-white landscape with a single miniature tree, as the photograph presented here. In Hänninen's monochromatic universe, objects melt together with the backgrounds, dissolving our sense of space and proportion. “Thematically, Hänninen touches on the eternal discussion of art – especially photography – of the relationship between object and its representation (...) She plays games with the observer, since the picture is in fact made of (photographic) paper.” Jens Friis: Artist Presentation at Brandts, Museet for Fotokunst, 2004.

Exhibited (selection, not comprehensive): Venice Biennal of Architecture 2004 (IT), Fotomuseum Winterthur 2003 (CH), Galleri Bo Bjerggaard 2001 (Cph, DK), Exit Art 2000 (New York, US), Hippolyte Gallery 2000 (Helsinki, FI). The other four editions of this particular work are in the collections of Fotomuseum Winterthur (CH), Heino Art Foundations (FI), and two private collectors in New York (US).

Provenance: Galleri Dam, Oslo and later in a private Danish collection.
