Paul Ipsen (b. Hallig Oland, Schleswig 1746, d. c. 1810)

A collection of 7 portraits of the Heitmann family, plantation owners on Sct. Croix. 1784. Red chalk on paper and watercolour on paper mounted in passepartout. Circular frames. Visible sizes from 7.5×5.5 cm to 7.5×7.5 cm.

The portraits presumably include the following members of the Heitmann family: Plantation owner Fridrich Christian Heitmann (1725–1792) and his wife Gertrud Heitmann, née Zimmerman (1731–1787), and 5 of their 11 children, Frederik Heitmann (b. 1755), Anne Maria Heitmann (1758–1827), Gertrud Heitmann, m. Hage (1766–1801), Heinrich Heitmann (c. 1769–1812) and Johan Ludvig Heitmann (1773–1825).

The present portraits were, according to an inscription on the back of one of the portraits, executed on Sct. Croix in 1784 by Ipsen, who was brought to the island by the Heitmann family for the purpose of portraying them.

Condition

Four of the portraits with minor holes. A few with some discolouration. Examined in the frames.
