Sophie Ernestine Henck (b. København 1822, d. Christiansdals Kloster 1893)
Still life with fruits, grapes and hazelnuts on a sill. Unsigned. Verso inscribed S.H. Oil on canvas. 41×50 cm. Period frame.
Sophie Ernestine Henck created tightly composed arrangements of flowers and often - as in the present work - with fruit and nuts on a frame, and she painted copies of 17th century Dutch painters, including the great flower painter Jan van Huysum (1682–1749).
She was a student of J.L. Jensen (1800–1856) and later by O.D. Ottesen (1816–1892) and travelled to Dresden in 1848 and stayed in Paris from 1857 to 1858.
We know that Henck exhibited at Charlottenborg in 1858 and again from 1867 to 1870 and in 1875 and -76. She was also represented with a work at Kvindelige Kunstneres Retrospektive Udstilling (The Women Artists' Retrospective Exhibition) at Den Frie Udstillingsbygning in Copenhagen in 1920.
ARoS - Aarhus Kunstmuseum and Fuglsang Art Museum both have a work Sophie Ernestine by Henck in their collections.
One minor repair / patch on the reverse. Minimal crackles, minor retouches and a faint mark along the stretcher.
