Martinus Rørbye (b. Drammen 1803, d. Copenhagen 1848)

Man with a fez smoking a pipe. Unsigned. Insribed by the artist “Schiacal-Mustaffa. Constantinopel”. And later inscribed M. Rørby. Pencil and watercolour on paper. Visible size 20.5×24.5 cm.

Martinus Rørbye stayed in Constantinople December 20, 1835 - February 1, 1836. Here he produced countless sketches of city life, be it in the cafes, in the baths or the hectic city life.

He must have been intrigued by the many pipe-smoking men be it those who smoke water pipes, or as here a seated Turk with his opium pipe.
