CHURCHILL THEME
Churchill visited North Africa no less than twice in August 1942, the first time from August 4–9 and the second time from August 17–23. The German and Italian troops in the region, led by Field Marshals Ettore Bastico (1876–1972) and Erwin Rommel (1891–1944), were by this time under massive pressure from the Allies, which a few months later, on May 7, 1943, resulted in the final collapse of the German-Italian forces. In that one day, 250,000 soldiers and officers surrendered. The battle for North Africa was over.
This is an original b/w silver gelatin press photograph from 1942, which appears with minor surface cracks. Pressure mark in the center of the photograph. In addition, ordinary handling marks.
