Oscar Björck (b. Stockholm 1860, d. s.p. 1929)
“Cheers!” A cheerful musician with a guitar. Signed and dated Oscar Björk 1883. Oil on canvas. 134×99 cm.
Exhibited: Herning Kongrescenter, “Skagen i Herning”, 2002 no. 42.
Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen auction 682, 2000 no. 1486 and 795, 2008 no. 536. The funny motif with the cheerful guitar player reminds one of the Dutch painter Frans Hals and his genre-like representations of various types of people. Björck's masterly ability to portray people and their characteristics is obvious in the present work. No wonder Björck was a very sought after portrait painter in Sweden, where he lived permanently from 1888 and until his death in 1929.
Marks from the stetcher visible on the front of the canvas. A small pressure mark with minimal peeling. Crackles of various sizes. A few retouches and min imal peelings primarily along the edge.
