Wilhelm Marstrand (b. Copenhagen 1810, d. s.p. 1873)

“Fra Venedig. Aften”. Brisk traffic on the Grand Canal after sunset. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 29×54 cm.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg, “Kunstforeningens Marstrand Udstilling”, 1898 no. 322 entitled “Aftenstudie fra Venedig. Udsigt mod Kirken St. Maria della Salute og Dogepaladset” (Evening study from Venice. View towards the Church of Santa Maria della Salute and the Doge's Palace), owned by mail clerk Just Wilde.

Literature: Kunst i Privat Eje, 1945, vol. II, ill. and mentioned pp. 136 and 137 (in Danish): “The fine small evening sketch from Venice shows Marstrand from his more lyrical side. The gentle evening atmosphere over the lagoon is beautifully rendered, and the gondolas draw their dark silhouettes with great effect against the blushing interplay of air and water”.

Anne-Mette Villumsen, “Fra Italien med kærlighed” (From Italy with love) in “Wilhelm Marstrand. Den store fortæller”, exhibition catalogue, 2020, mentioned and ill. p. 162. Here Villumsen writes among other things about the present painting (in Danish): “Marstrand may also have intended to make an over-door with a motif from Venice, because he also made an elongated motif in transverse format with a view over the city from the lagoon. Here, he chose to place three well-known buildings from Venice strategically: from the right the Doge's Palace with the campanile of St. Mark's Church, Santa Maria della Salute in the middle, and to the left the church of San Giorgio Maggiore. Both gondolas and sailing ships can be seen on the water” (p. 162). Villumsen continues by drawing an over-door painting by P. C. Skovgaard (1817–1875) into the description: “Like Skovgaard's painting [also ill. p. 162], the shortened gondolas on the water function as markers, which create depth in the image space, but they also help to clearly establish that the motif is from Venice” (p. 162).

Provenance: Mail clerk Just Wilde (1898). Mrs Ida Parnow (1945).
