James B. Irwin: An original NASA b/w offset photograph of the Apollo 15 astronaut David R. Scott (b. 1932) bent over the mission's lunar rover on the Moon on July 31, 1971. Back with describing text. Photo size 20.5×25.5 cm. Frame size 33×43 cm.

The early NASA lunar missions had primarily focused upon landing - difficult enough in itself - and had not left much room for scientific research. This saw an improvement with the Apollo 15, which was launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 26, 1971. After a successful lunar landing on July 30 the astronauts brought out their equipment, including the first vehicle in these surroundings. The first lunar driver ever became the leader of the mission, David R. Scott. On August 7, 1971 astronauts David R. Scott, James B. Irwin (1930–1991) and Alfred Worden returned safely to the Earth.
