The 'Cuban Missile Crisis' is the name given to the 13 days in October 1962 when the US and the Soviet Union mutually threatened to use nuclear weapons against each other if necessary. The crisis occurred when the Soviet Union secretly began deploying long-range missiles in Cuba, less than 200 km from the US mainland, and is probably the closest the world has ever come to a nuclear war. On October 18, the third day of the crisis, President John F. Kennedy met with his counterpart's foreign minister, Andrei Gromyko, at the White House.
