Laurits Tuxen (b. Copenhagen 1853, d. s.p. 1927)

“Fra min have på Skagen”. From my garden in Skagen. C. 1912. Sign. L. Tuxen. Oil on canvas. 66×46 cm.

Lise Svanholm, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Laurits Tuxen, 1990, no. 898.

Laurits Tuxen married Frederikke Treschow (1856–1946) in 1901, and together they bought the old post office in Vesterby, the outermost house in the western part of Skagen, to be able to live there in the summer. Here Tuxen began his career as a 'Skagen painter' in earnest.

They named their house Villa Dagminne, and here the Tuxen family spent many happy summers with their two girls Yvonne and Nina. The garden is particularly known for its beautiful rhododendron bushes, but in this painting it is the garden's purple sea of flowering lilac bushes that can be seen in the background, and in the foreground the blooming pink roses in the antique marble pool, known from several photos.
