Unknown photographer: An original black-and-white press photograph of Sir Winston Churchill showing his famous V-sign.

An ancient myth states that the use of the V-sign arose during The Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) when Welsh archers fought on the English side, against the French. According to the narrative the French warriors cut off the the for- and middlefingers of captured archers and waving with the two fingers was therefore seen as an insult by the French.

Condition

This is an original photograph from 1955, which shows normal signs of age and handling, including thin surface cracklings and a few small stains. Layout notes are seen on the back (“single pic”) as well as publication date and the associated newspaper article.
