Samuel Kleinschmidt (1814–1886), a Greenland missionary and linguist, was born in the small settlement of Alluitsoq (then 'Lichtenau'). The son of a Herrnhut missionary, he learned the Greenlandic language as a child. After completing his education in Europe, he returned to Greenland in 1841 and became a headmaster at 'Ny Herrnhut' in Nuuk. He was dismissed in 1859, but was thereafter employed at the Danish teacher's training college in town, where he worked until his death. Kleinschmidt had an unusual gift for languages, and a profound linguistic insight. Kleinschmidt, who created the Greenlandic written language, began in 1858 to publish a large amount of serious literature from his own printing office. They were all written by himself. His first book was Nunalerutit from 1858, and besides his larger works, Kleinschmidt also published a collection of smaller print. His greatest accomplishment, is his translation of The Old Testament, which he published in pamphlets during the years of 1864–1876.
