‘Bau einer modernen Mauer’ [Building a modern wall]. Original German b/w press photograph of the erection of the Berlin Wall at the sector boundary near Machnow in the south of the city in August 1961. Back with description and stamped ‘Presse- und Informationsamt der Bundesregierung’ (Ministry of Press and Information of the Federal Government [of Germany]). Development from 1961. Black lacquered wooden frame with double glazing. Visible size 18×23 cm. Frame size 28×33 cm.
The 'Berlin Wall', whose construction began on August 13, 1961, and whose purpose was to prevent the mass exodus from East Berlin (and thus the GDR), which in the period 1945–1961 had drained the workers' and farmers' state of around 3.5 million citizens - often the young and educated - was in some places more like a fence than an actual wall. Until November 1989, the 'Berlin Wall' encircled the whole of West Berlin.
This is an original b/w silver gelatin press photograph from 1961, which shows a surface crease in the upper left corner. Furthermore normal signs of age and handling.
