Flemming Lassen (b. 1902, d. 1984)
Easy chair frame with tapering mahogany legs. Not upholstered. Designed 1940. This example made 1940–1950s by cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær.
Provenance: Engineer Niels Steensen.
Niels Steensen was partner and founder of the Consulting Engineers Steensen & Varming, a company that from its start in 1933 grew to become an important part of the development of modernism in Danish Architecture, and to some extent later also in England and Scotland. Steensen & Varming had a close cooperation with more or less all the best Danish Arhcitects such as Arne Jacobsen, Flemming Lassen, Jørn Utzon, Kaj Gottlob, C.F. Møller, Halldor Gunnløgsson, Henning Larsen a.o. The Architect couple Eva and Nils Koppel were especially so closely tied with the company, that they also became personal friends of Nils Steensen and Jørgen Varming. Apart from the construction of Jørgen Varmings own villa they also assisted with the interiors. It was with their recomendation and assistance that this chair was acquired.
Model presented at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark, 1940. Literature: Grete Jalk [ed.]: “40 Years of Danish Furniture Design”, vol. 2, p. 116.
The chair has no upholstery and is suitable for restoration. Some chips on mahogany in top of legs and some loose sides.
