Literature: The present work is a preparatory study for a larger piece by Irminger, which is part of the collection at the Lolland-Falster Stiftsmuseum. Both the preparatory study and the original work are mentioned in H. Chr. Christensen's catalog of Valdemar Irminger's paintings (1917) on page 118 as no. 537 (original work) and 538 (preparatory study).
Regarding no. 538, it is stated: “Forarbejde til foregaaende; men uden at Skibet ses. Overlægen med to Damer samt fem Børn på Stranden. Desuden en Hund. V. I. 07. Tilh. Grosserer Sønnich Olsen.” ("Preliminary work for the preceding; however, the ship is not visible. The chief physician with two ladies and five children on the beach. Additionally, a dog. V. I. 07. Owned by Grosserer Sønnich Olsen.)
