Marco Evaristti (b. Chile 1963)

“Pige” (Girl), 2004. Silver patinated metal. H. 27 cm.

The idea for the sculpture is born on a street somewhere in the former Yugoslavia in 2002, where the artist Marco Evaristti sees a little girl, who makes a big impression on him. The girl is missing an arm and a leg. She is pregnant and no more than 13 years old. A bus drives past her, and the girl gives the bus the finger. The artist gets the feeling that the girl is very proud despite the circumstances of her life. He does not talk to the girl, but believes her to be the victim of a mine.

In 2004, the sculpture was part of Folkekirkens Nødhjælp's (DanChurchAid) mine clearing campaign 'Lars og Lone rydder Albanien' (Lars and Lone to clear Albania). The artist donated his proceeds from the sale of the bronze sculpture, and on the same occasion Politikens Galleri released smaller casts of the sculpture.
