Russia, 18th century

A large Russian iconostasis deesis icon, depicting the Archangel Mikhail holding a scepter and carrying a globe. Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. 18th century. 78.5×42 cm.

Mikhail was the leader of the angels who were faithful to God in the struggle against Satan and all the fallen angels. He is one of the seven angels who stands at the throne of God. In the book of Daniel, Mikhail is called the greatest and most distinguished of the princes. It is said that Mikhail has four main tasks: Firstly, to fight Satan, evil incarnated. Secondly, to save the faithful souls, especially in their time of death. Thirdly, to be the champion of God's people. At first the Jews in the Old Testament and later the Christians – he therefore becomes the patron saint of the church. Fourthly, to guide souls away from earth and bring them to their judgment. Mikhail possesses an immense degree of power. In one piece of scripture, entitled “Abraham's Testament” and from around 100 AD, he is even able to retrieve and save souls from hell. Mikhail is celebrated on 29 September, Mikhailmas.

In the lowest row of the iconostasis, the deesis or intercession row, the central figures from the Ortodox tradition can be seen, and here St. Mikhail usually appears.
