Natural pink diamonds are very rare, and only about 0.01% of all diamonds are pink. Of those, about 90% are mined in the Argyle Diamond Mine in Kimberley in Western Australia, which is one of the largest diamond mines in the world. The mine opened in 1985 and has since then been the only reliable source for pink diamonds ranging in colour from rose-petal pink to deep blue-violet. No more than fifty diamonds weighing above .50 ct. are mined in a year. Because the pink diamonds are so rare, they are very sought after on the international diamond market and the prices have shown continual growth in value year over year. With the depletion of the ore body in the Argyle Diamond Mine and the likelihood of the mine’s closure by the end of 2020, 90% of the world's coloured diamond supply will dry up and the industry is expecting the existing diamonds to explode in value as a result. These already precious stones are seeing the biggest surge in interest and popularity since Ben Affleck gave one to Jennifer Lopez in 2002. Their beauty and rarity already made them valuable commodities, and now that the supply is running out, interest is pushing their value and price through the roof. According to Arpège, “At the upper echelon, these pink diamonds see an average price per carat of $1.5 to $3 million per carat. Investors and collectors are taking notice of these increasing values, and as supply decreases with the upcoming closure of the Argyle Diamond Mine, the demand is sure to continue to drive up this price”.
