Edgar Mitchell: An original NASA colour offset photograph of the Apollo 14 astronaut Alan B. Shepard - the first American in space - planting Stars and Stripes in the soil of the Moon on February 5th. 1971. Back with describing text. Photo size 20×25 cm. Frame size 33×43 cm.
As a participant in the Project Mercury Alan Shepard became the first American in space, an event that took place on May 5th 1961. Thereby he gained for himself an eternal place within space history. In 1963 he was diagnosed with Meniere's disease (characterized by dizziness, reduced hearing, whispering in the ears) and due to this he lost his pilot's certificate. Soon after, however, he was appointed head of all NASA astronauts, a post he kept until 1969. That year an operation cured him entirely and as a result his certificate was returned.
Apollo 14 was launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on January 31, 1971 with the astronauts Alan B. Shepard (leader) (1923–1998), Stuart Roosa (1933–1994) and Edgar Mitchell (1930–2016) aboard. The crew returned unharmed to earth on February 9. During their voyage Shepard and Mitchell spent a total of 9 hours, 22 minutes and 31 seconds on the lunar ground. Roosa remained in orbit in the command module.
This is an original NASA colour offset photograph from 1971, which shows only very modest signs of handling.
