Aristide Maillol

Longus: Daphnis et Chloe. Paris: Philippe Gonin 1937. 1st edition. Illustrated with orig. woodcuts by Aristide Maillol. One of 500 num. copies with an extra suite of the illustrations signed by Maillol. Loose leaves as issued, in wrappers and slipcase.

The world famous French sculptor, painter, and printmaker Aristide Maillol attempted to preserve and purify the Classical sculpture of Greece and Rome. Most of his works depict the mature female form and are characterized by emotional restraint, clear composition, and serene surfaces. Besides the woodcut illustrations for “Daphnis and Chloe” by Longus (1937) he made a series of illustrations to Vergil's “Eclogues” published by Harry Graf Kessler in 1926–27. Maillol also illustrated “Chansons pour elle” by Paul Verlaine (1939).

Monod 7261, Carteret 243, Rauch 141.
