Clara Carl (b. København 1859, d. s.p. 1939)

A summer day at the country side. Signed and dated C. Carl 1893. Oil on canvas. 32.5×58 cm.

Clara Carl's production is relatively sparse and we rarely see her at auction.

She studied the landscape, as in the present painting, and the still life genre where flowers were the dominant element. Carl made her debut at Charlottenborg in 1889. She was then admitted to The Royal Academy of Fine Arts where she was taught by Vilhelm Kyhn (1819–1903), Bertha Wegmann (1846–1926) and Julius Paulsen (1860–1940) among others. In 1889 she travelled to Paris and Belgium and lastly the Netherlands in 1893. She exhibited at Charlottenborg with occasional interruptions each year form 1899 to 1910 and at Kvindernes Udstilling (The Women's Exhibition) i København in 1895.
