Poul Gernes (b. Frederiksberg 1925, d. Ängelholm 1996)

Untitled. Unsigned. Lithograph. Visible size 45×63 cm.

Poul Gernes (1925–1996) is a prominent Danish artist and a central figure in the experimental art scene in Denmark. He is best known for his colorful and geometric works, which often explore the relationship between art, space, and society. Gernes' art is characterized by a playful approach to color and form, and his work spans a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, graphics, and public decorations.

One of Gernes' most iconic works is his decoration of the Herlev Main Library, completed in 1970. Here, he transformed the gray concrete building into a vibrant artwork, where bright colors and geometric patterns create a dynamic and lively atmosphere. This project illustrates Gernes' vision that art should not only be seen in galleries but also be integrated into everyday life, where it can influence and enrich people's lives.

Gernes was also a co-founder of the Experimental Art School in Copenhagen in 1961, where he taught and inspired a whole generation of young artists. The school became a headquarter for radical ideas and a free space for artistic exploration, and Gernes' pedagogical approach was marked by an anti-authoritarian stance. He encouraged his students to challenge the established concept of art and to work collectively, reflecting his own belief in the social and political potential of art.

His artistic practice was not only an aesthetic exploration but also a social commentary. Gernes believed that art should be accessible to everyone and not just to an elite. This principle led him to create artworks in public spaces, where people could experience art in their daily lives. His works can therefore be found in hospitals, schools, and other public buildings, where they create an experience of joy and community.
