Joseph Chinard, after (France, 1756-1813)
“Madame Récamier”, French white marble bust. Second half of the 19th century. H. 64 cm.
The young Juliette Récamier (1777–1849) was a French intellectual, widely known in her time for her interesting literary salons as well as for her beauty. Only fifteen years old, she married the thirty-years older banker Jacques Récamier. For her relations with the Napoleon-hostile opposition, she was exiled and left France and travelled to Rome and then Naples. She returned, however, to Paris after the fall of Napoleon. Several of the artists in her time painted her portrait.
