Anna Elisabeth Munch (b. København 1876, d. s.p. 1960)
A naked boy at the edge of the water. Signed and dated A. E. M. 16. Oil on canvas laid on cardboard. 30×33 cm.
Anna Elisabeth Munch grew up in a home inspired by the thoughts of N. F. S. Grundtvig with art and culture as an important part of her upbringing. At the age of thirteen she received lessons in painting from Karl Jensen in 1889 and from 1891–1892 in C. N. Overgaard. After this she undertook a lengthy study tour in Italy and Paris with her mother and sister, accompanied only by a maid servant. She completed the journey in 1894 with months of lessons at Académie Julian under Jean Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. Having returned to Denmark, Munch became a student of Julius Paulsen from 1895 to 1897 studied fresco technique with Joakim Skovgaard in 1909–1910. One of her fields was working with large religious motifs, and she became the first woman to create altarpieces for the Danish church. Over time she revisited France and Italy and traveled extensively to Sweden and Norway. With the writer Sophie Breum she had a house built in Kerteminde on Funen - Munch illustrated several of her books, and through Breum she was introduced to the womens movement. The connection to Kerteminde furthermore lead to an influence from the painters Fritz Syberg and Johannes Larsen, also living in Kerteminde. The inspiration is visible in her depiction of children in the nature carried out with a light clear palet and loose brush strokes - as seen in the present painting.
A few minor retouches, scratches and pinholes in corners.
