“En jægerinde”. A huntress standing with a shot bird in her right hand, in her left hand she is holding a bow. Figure of patinated bronze. Signed with monogram and dated 26. Novbr. 1890. H. 224 cm. H. with plinth 230 cm.

Vilhelm Bissen was educated with the tradition from the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, a tradition he continued. Around 1880 Bissen was influenced by the French naturalism and that meant a new departure for his art. He was the first in Denmark to introduce the naturalistic observation in his idiom and Bissen was a pioneer for a whole generation of young sculptors. Most important among his naturalistic works are a series of women: Danaïde, En jægerinde (a huntress), Pottemalerske (a pottery painter), Atalanta (Greek goddess and huntress) and well-known personalities in contemporary dresses, among others C. C. Hall, Prime Minister, N. F. S. Grundtvig , Hymn Writer and Danish Queen Caroline Amalie.
