“From around 1944 the use of colour begins to change, the range of colour becomes brighter and cooler; green and yellow, speckled with red and blue, displaces the earth colours, while the shapes become smaller and the movement freer. It is as if the earth, after having rested dark and heavy, saturated with power and juice, and after having been thoroughly ploughed, has now proved fertile and stands covered by lush, sun-drenched vegetation, in which demonic beings move, whose faces shine towards us with enigmatic smiles.” (Poul Vad in “Ejler Bille”, Danske Nutidskunstnere Vol I, Munksgaard, Copenhagen, 1961 p. 17.)
