Hedeby, Penning, ca. 825, Hbg. 1, Malm. KG 3, CE II/D I, Pl. 6:5/15:25, 0.68 g, oxidation spot, edge damage – toning
Only a few examples of this category of imitative coinage, which was inspired by the coinage of the Frankish king Charlemagne in Dorestad, are known to be in private collections. Malmer was aware of only two specimens of this particular variant—one in the Berlin collection and one found in a grave at Björkö. The composition of the hoards containing the broader group (Carolus imitations II) suggests a dating to around the year 825, at which time the Danes, according to both the Frankish Royal Annals and the Vita Ansgari, were ruled by King Horik I.
