Carl Johann Tegelsten (, St. Petersburg 1833-1855)

A Russian Imperial silver-gilt coffee and tea service, comprising coffee pot, tea pot and creamer, front and back engraved with respectively Tsar Alexander II of Russia's mitre crowned monogram and the Imperial Russian double-headed eagle, flower lid finals, top edges punched with rocailles and foliage, on four volute-shaped legs. Carl Johann Tegelsten, assayer Dmitri Ilich Tverskoi 1843, St. Petersburg town mark, 84 standard, stamped inventory no. respectively 11, 21 and 23. Weight c. 1,702 g. H. 19 cm; 10.5 cm; 9 cm. (3).

Provenance: Niilo Helander (b. Luhtkylä, Finland 1865, d. Helsinki 1930) and his Danish-born wife, Fanny Helander, née Clausen (b. Bregninge 1894, d. Nivaa 1980), who were married in 1915. Niilo Helander was originally a merchant in Heinola, north-east of Helsinki, where he became a wholesaler with export of agricultural products to St. Petersburg as well as member and chairman of the city council. Meanwhile Niilo Helander was the initiator of several local and national projects such as the construction of railways and the promotion of local businesses. Later he became a real estate investor and the couple moved to Helsinki in 1922. In 1927, he founded a cultural fund that still exists. In order to improve their bourgeois residential, they acquired, among other items, this present plate as well as the present coffee and tea service of gilded silver - all items with Imperial Russian provenance from Tsar Alexander II of Russia. After Niilo Helander's death in 1930, Fanny Helander moved back to Denmark. Thence by descent to Niilo and Fanny Helander's grandchild, residing in Denmark, until today.
