Søren Emil Carlsen (b. Copenhagen 1848, d. New York 1932)

Still life with copper utensils and wine glass on a table. Signed Emil Carlsen. Oil on canvas. 51 × 64 cm.

Søren Emil Carlsen, brother of the painter Carl Carlsen, is not very renowned in Denmark. When he was 24 years old in 1872 S. E. Carlsen left for New York. He was back in Copenhagen and Paris in 1875 for further training. After several visits to Paris he learned how to express his soul's quietness and melancholy in his delicate still life paintings as in this one. He visited Skagen in 1910 and 1911, at a time where he was a successful painter and teacher in America.
