A faceted glass paper weight, under the thin top an inlaid image of King Christian IX of Denmark (1818–1906), which is reflected through to the bottom. Denmark, c. 1865. W. 6.5 cm. L. 11 cm.

King Christian IX of Denmark (1818–1906) was born at Gottorp Castle as Prince of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and was the son of Duke Wilhelm (1785–1831) and Duchess Louise of Glücksborg (1789–1867), née Princess of Hesse-Kassel. Prince Christian was appointed heir to the Danish throne in 1852, proclaimed King of Denmark in 1863 and became later known as The Father-in-Law of Europe. He was the brother of, among others, Duke Carl of Glücksburg, Duke Frederik of Glücksburg and Duchess Frederikke of Anhalt-Bernburg.

The image is after a photograph from around the time of the king's accession to the throne in 1863.

Condition

A single, small chip at the upper left corner and minor scratches in bottom. Glue spots at image.
