Provenance: Circolo Scandinavo / Skandinavisk Forening i Rom (Inv. No. AII 11).

The sculptor August Saabye began his career as an apprentice metalworker before being admitted to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1842. Alongside his studies at the Academy, he worked in the studio of Herman Wilhelm Bissen (1798–1868), where he was trained in the neoclassical tradition following Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844).

With a two-year travel scholarship from the Academy, he traveled via Paris to Rome in 1855 and ended up staying there for a decade, until 1865, supported by the earnings from his works. In Italy, he studied and embraced the Roman antique style and began creating larger sculptures.
