Anna Gumlich-Kempf was a student of the German-French painter René Grönland (1849–1892), who at the time was one of the leading artists in the still life-genre. As the result of her education, Gumlich-Kempf was best known for her still lifes, although she also painted landscapes such as the present work depicting a garden with shadows and sunlight playing on the brickwork through the treetops.
Over the years she exhibited at the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin (Grosse Berliner Kunstausstellung) between 1903 and 1920 as well as in the exhibition hall, Glaspalast, in Munich.
Minor peelings along edge. Repair at lower edge. In need of cleaning.
