Provenance: Architect Kaj Stensballe, thence by descent in the family. As can be seen in the accompanying photographic material, this chair was one of a pair of FJ 45 chairs that were later separated. This interior also included Finn Juhl's “Dream Table” as well as the extremely rare “FJ 44” chair. These chairs were sold at Bruun Rasmussen at auction 873 as lots 1005 and 1006.

The furniture was probably acquired in 1945 and possibly directly from The Cabinetmakers’ Exhibition.

The chair differs from later FJ 45 chairs by being a bit rough in the execution as well as flat on the top of the side carving of the stretcher under the seat.

The “FJ 45” chair may not be as iconic as the “Chieftain” chair, but it certainly is the most beloved Finn Juhl chair of all. Presented as early as 1945 it came to define, in many ways, how a mid-century armchair should be. The chair would become one of the biggest commercial successes for cabinetmaker Niels Vodder and was produced by him until the 1970s.
