Hans Christian Andersen (b. Odense 1805, d. Copenhagen 1875)

Autograph letter. 2 pages. No date, no place [01.04.1872]. The letter is missing the last 4 words and signature. 8vo. Written on Andersen's personal letterhead paper. Bound in modern full paper, with bookplate. (FP)

This charming letter (mentioned in the diaries) is written to the young student Alfred Ipsen in Randers. In the letter, Andersen talks about his writings and describes his forthcoming 2 month long journey to Italy - a country he visited 8 times: (In English translation): “[...] I am sending you the small collection of fairy tales and stories I have written and published in various magazines and journals over the course of the last two years; ”The Great Sea Serpent“ and ”The Gardener and The Gentlefolk“ are the two youngest. In eight to ten days I will travel abroad for two months. I have been in poor health all winter and hope to gain some strength and vigor from this little excursion, however, the trip will not go further than to one of the lakes of northern Italy. I would be delighted to receive a letter from you. In Copenhagen, my address is Nyhavn No. 18. God bless [you. Your most attentive, Hans Christian Andersen.”]
