Anthonore Christensen (b. Copenhagen 1849, d. Usserød 1926)

Forest floor with beech tree. Signed monogram. Oil on canvas, laid on cardboard. 25×32 cm.

The flower painter Anthonie Eleonore (Anthonore) Tscherning was taught by her mother, Eleonore Tscherning (1817–1890), and later by Emma Thomsen (1820–1897) and O. D. Ottesen (1816–1892), who were also both flower painters. After her marriage to philologist Richard Christensen (1843–1876) in 1871, she became known as Anthonore Christensen.

Anthonore Christensen's production moved away from the traditional floral depictions with the magnificent bouquets and decorative cut roses on stone frames that we see in the work of earlier flower painters, to more unadorned motifs with forest floor motifs and wildflowers in their natural landscapes. She is quoted in an interview in the newspaper København on July 6th 1919 as follows (in Danish): “It was not enough for me to bring the flowers into the living room and paint them in a jar or in a glass, as the times demanded. I wanted to bring in the little bit of nature on which they grew”. The present work is a fine example of a more natural representation of flowers.

Christensen travelled to Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Paris and Greece on several study trips and later taught painting to several members of the Danish and Greek royal families. She made her debut at Charlottenborg at the age of 18 and exhibited frequently thereafter, including internationally in Philadelphia in 1876 and in Munich in 1901 as well as doing a solo exhibition in 1895. She was active in the establishment of the Women's Exhibition in 1895. She received the Neuhausen Prize in 1887, sold several works to members of the Danish and Greek royal families and several of her paintings were printed and sold as postcards.
