After a successful expedition to northern India Edmund Hillary joined the British Mount Everest scouting missions in 1951 and 1952. On May 29th 1953 he reached the mountain's peak. He later returned to area on several occasions, partly for climbing, partly for building schools. 1956–1958 Hillary crossed Antarctica on a tracked vehicle and reached the Geographic South Pole on January 4th 1958. Edmund Hillary was the New Zealand ambassador to India between 1984–1990.
This is an original black-and-white photograph from 1956, which shows normal signs of handling. Furthermore contemporary retouching. Back somewhat discoloured due to ageing.
