Unknown photographer: An original black-and-white press photograph of the New Zealand explorer Sir Edmund Hillary (1919–2008) preparing his expedition to the South Pole in the late summer of 1956. Back with related press cutting, cropping instructions, stamp of The Topical Press Agency Ltd. and date of publishing (August 21st 1956). Photo size 26×20 cm. Frame size 42×32 cm.

After a successful expedition to northern India Edmund Hillary joined the British Mount Everest scouting missions in 1951 and 1952. On May 29th 1953 he reached the mountain's peak. He later returned to area on several occasions, partly for climbing, partly for building schools. 1956–1958 Hillary crossed Antarctica on a tracked vehicle and reached the Geographic South Pole on January 4th 1958. Edmund Hillary was the New Zealand ambassador to India between 1984–1990.

Condition

This is an original black-and-white photograph from 1956, which shows normal signs of handling. Furthermore contemporary retouching. Back somewhat discoloured due to ageing.
